Frequently asked questions
What is a top-level domain (TLD)?
The top-level domain (TLD) is found at the far right of the domain name. If you look up at the browser address bar, you’ll find our domain name, namecheap.com, and .com is the TLD.
There are over a thousand top-level domains to choose from, and you’re in the best place to find the perfect domain name for your next project. Read our article What is a TLD? to learn more about top-level domains.
What are domain extensions? Are they the same as TLDs?
Yes, domain extensions are the same as TLDs. They are also sometimes referred to as domain suffixes, URL endings, and TLD extensions.
What domain extensions are available to register?
You can discover and search for all domain extensions on our domain name search page. Use the search bar as a TLD checker to find your dream domain name.
What does the ‘Type’ column in the table mean?
Filter by ‘Type’ to see which of our TLDs are country code top-level domains (ccTLDs), and which are generic top-level domains (gTLDs). While ccTLDs are assigned to a particular country or region and their usage can be restricted, gTLDs are open to anyone, in any country.
What does the ‘Country’ column in the table mean?
Use this column to find the country or region that is assigned to a particular ccTLD. Although many ccTLDs are only reserved for individuals or businesses that operate within that country, some are open, and work just like gTLDs. You can find out more by checking out our Country Code and Geographic TLDs.
